Good evening, ladies and gentlemen, welcome aboard ‘Paprika’ Airline flight. Our flight will take one hour and thirty minutes. You are going to dream with a dreaming detective named ‘Paprika’. Traveling with her, you will certainly be amazed by Mr. Satoshi Kon’s Japanese animation world. We all wish you a pleasant journey.

In the near future, in Japan, a new medical device called ’DC Mini’ is invented to treat patients in their dreams. Unfortunately, DC Mini is stolen just before it is completed. From then on, scientists and doctors become crazy one after another, suffering from nightmares. Having the emergency, it seems that only Miss Paprika has the ability to fight against dreaming terrorists. The clews tangle, the truth concealed. Who is the criminal? What is the purpose?

‘Paprika’ is appealing for its main characters. Miss Paprika’s dual identity might evoke your experience of acting separate roles in life. Besides, the theme music with notes jumping, spinning, twining, just like she is leaping between buildings, playing on the billboard and dancing in the sky. One weakness is its typical ending. However, its expression is so novel that you will be fascinated by the spectacular scene. Also, bright colors and dazzling images visualize abstract dreaming world successfully. Apart from frames, the theme is thoughtful. ‘Paprika’ is insightful. It tells us to face ourselves, follow our hearts. In the story, two ‘personalities’ of Miss Paprika quarrel, discussing whether she should face the truth that she falls in love. However, ‘Paprika’ is sarcastic. The famous symbol in the film is a tremendous parade full of ‘human-objects’. Mammonists change into fortune cats; people who are addicted to social network become mobile phones...The director uses material description to mock the abnormal behavior in the society and arise our awareness.

‘Paprika’ is suitable for people who love detective movies. If you want to flee from tedious daily life, you will enjoy it as well. But small children may not as they might be afraid of the ‘strange’ dreaming world. In a word, ‘Paprika’ is a fantasy film which You can watch for fun while evacuating deeply.
