About
They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? (TSPDT) is a modest but growing film resource dedicated to the art of motion picture filmmaking and most specifically to that one particular individual calling the shots from behind the camera - the film director. Amongst other content, TSPDT currently houses two of the most referenced film lists on the internet (The 1,000 Greatest Films and The 21st Century's Most Acclaimed Films) along with a growing set of director profiles.

Who, why, where?
TSPDT is primarily my (Bill Georgaris) part-time folly, with kind assistance from my partner Vicki Platt. We are both life-long film lovers based in Adelaide, Australia. TSPDT is a completely hobby-driven enterprise which merely aims to provide a reasonable cinematic resource for fellow enthusiasts.

My celluloid leanings…
Beyond the Canon (2009)
One-Line Review (2009)
Sight & Sound (2012)
100 Evenings Illuminated (2013)

Many thanks to everyone that has supported and assisted TSPDT over the journey.

INTRODUCTION to the 1,000 Greatest Films
Current Version: January 2021 (16th edition)
Published on January 27, 2021
NEW The full starting list of 20,430 films can now be viewed online as a sortable table.

Dear film and list lovers, welcome to the sixteenth version of the 1,000 Greatest Films. The past year was clearly a difficult and unsettling one, with still plenty of hard times ahead. With this in mind, I'd like to wish every one of you all the very best.

As you will discover, this year's edition has been heavily influenced by the inclusion of many end-of-decade lists that weren't compiled in time for 2020's venture. Consequently, a handful of highly-acclaimed films from the 2010s have broken into the 1,000 in a very big way. Toni Erdmann, Under the Skin, Boyhood, The Master and The Act of Killing, in particular, are all now comfortably residing within the top 500. I just do the numbers and don't control what pops out, but It's hard to dispute that any of these fine films do not belong here.

This year's edition encompasses a modest 25 changes to the list (six down from last year). Twelve films appear for the first time, whilst the other thirteen are re-entries. The top part of the list continues to be set in concrete, with no movement until Battleship Potemkin and Taxi Driver swap the 14th and 15th positions. Only one change to the top 100 with an Ernst Lubitsch replacing a Chris Marker.

I have introduced a notable 'upgrade' to this year's edition that many of you will be mildly excited about, and that is, the disclosure of every film's ranking. I stubbornly refused to reveal these rankings for many years, but hey, here we are.

The Starting List, with full rankings, can now be viewed here (as an online sortable table) or via the traditional EXCEL spreadsheet (also, very sortable, of course). If you're looking at the spreadsheet, please note that I only began allocating rankings to every film in 2015, therefore full rankings are unavailable for the 2006-2014 editions.

In terms of sources, the number of best-of/all-time individual lists, used to compile the 1,000 Greatest Films, now tallies 6,952 (from 5,306 critics/filmmakers). The number of miscellaneous lists used (genre-based, country-based, etc.) now sits at 5,324. That’s 12,276 unique lists in total.

In summary, here is the breakdown of individual best-of/all-time ballots used, or if you like, from where I have begged, borrowed and stolen:
