The story takes place in France, Italy, and islands in the Mediterranean during the historical events of 1815–1839: the era of the Bourbon Restoration through the reign of Louis-Philippe of France. It begins just before the Hundred Days period (when Napoleon returned to power after his exile). The historical setting is a fundamental element of the book, an adventure story primarily concerned with themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy, and forgiveness. It centres around a man who is wrongfully imprisoned, escapes from jail, acquires a fortune, and sets about getting revenge on those responsible for his imprisonment. However, his plans have devastating consequences for the innocent as well as the guilty. In addition, it is a story that involves romance, loyalty, betrayal, and selfishness, shown throughout the story as characters slowly reveal their true inner nature.

牛皮，一部复仇史诗，对复仇后男主的心理探讨也是一绝，相比之下，fgo伯爵形象实在是丑化。要是前面能把水手的经历再悲惨点或许会更好(我也有资格评论世界名著？ 等待和希望。

大仲马的连载写作经历多少与当时和后来的港台通俗小说家有些相似。有《基督山伯爵》这样通俗小说的经典模板，还有如“达达尼昂三部曲”这样于报刊上连载创作的脍炙人口的堪称欧洲侠义小说的经典系列（国内早期还将《三个火枪手》翻译为《侠隐记》，后续两部翻译为《续侠隐记》《小侠隐记》）。说其为“19世纪的欧洲金庸”，确实挺有那个味道的(bgm38)。
